I learned with my pregnancy with Luke(not sure why they didn't catch this with Caleb) that I am not immuned to German measles. My doc wanted me to get the vaccine before I left the hospital, but I declined it. I'm wondering if I should get it.......crazy that i'm worrying about getting the mmr shot for my son and now contemplating it for myself.

Amber-I was vaccinated for Rubella (german measles) when I was 13 or so. This was in England, and it was the "norm" for girls to get it..I am sure it was because of the risk of catching it during PG.

Robin - thanks... I freaked out at this part. I can't imagine just going by what her chiropractor said. I would understand more if she did research and made a informed choice (which could have been the case).

She stopped vaccinating her 2-month-old son Matthew when her chiropractor raised questions about mercury in the shots. Three years later, she came home to find the little boy feverish and gasping for breath. Emergency-room doctors couldn't find the cause—until one experienced physician finally asked the right question. "He took one look at Matthew and asked me if he was fully vaccinated," says Lacek. "I said no." It turned out Matthew had been infected with Hib, bacteria that causes meningitis, swelling of the airway and, in severe cases, swelling of the brain tissue. After relying on a breathing tube for several days, Matthew recovered without any neurological effects, and a grateful Lacek immediately got him and his siblings up to date on their immunizations. "I am angry that people are promoting not getting vaccinated and messing with people's lives like that," she now says.

Wow Laura, amazing.

Robin thanks for sharing.

This is what frustrates me:

"Parents of these unimmunized kids know that as long as nearly all the other children get their shots, there should not be enough pathogen around to sicken anyone"

Christie - I don't think parents can use that excuse any more. Only 77% of all children in the US have all their shots.

Being that I have 2 that are fully vaxed (Molly hasnt had all the ones they are offer now because they werent offered when she was a baby) and 1 that is not Vaxed I may be able to shed light on the frustrations you guys are expressing. Most people (I cant speak for everyone here) that dont vax are not relying on other kids being vaxed, they are of the opinion that kids that are not vaccinated are healthier because they do not have a suppressed immune system. I am not fully of that opinion, I think vaccinations have done a really great job at reducing so many illnesses. I believe in the vaccination part of the shots, it is all the preservatives that scare me. So most parents dont assume other kids are vaxed, they just feel more comfortable with the immune system their child has.
I am really not trying to start a debate, I still struggle with my choice because I believe there is a good thing being done by vaccines. I would not have vaxed Mia regardless because of all her tummy problems and her heart murmur, my doc thinks it is good to wait on babies that have problems. I was just hoping to be able to help you ladies see that non-vaxing parents arent looking to your kids for protection

Oh Lisa I most definitely do not believe that all parts fall under that assumption. I am just saying that as someone who wishes they would come out with some clear cut answers as to these issues it is hard knowing that I am vaccinating my child despite the "risks" that are out there and others don't and my child being vaccinated helps protect others.

I don't really know how to say what I mean.. it can't come across in written word. I am definitely not one that likes a debate.

Christie, I totally agree with what you are saying. There are some people out there that dont vax because they are lazy. I babysat a girl once that was not up to date because the mom didnt want to take her in and would say "well those illnesses are gone now so she should be okay" It made me so mad, because I was having to take her daughter with me to the doc to get Morgan's shots. That is one of the big reasons I couldnt do daycare anymore becasue lazy parents make me so mad.
I am with you to that I would love to see some clear cut answers, but all the literature out there is either for or against so I feel it all biased or put out by people that stand to make a profit

I completely agree. I want some real research.. some real results. Until I get them I can only do what I think is best for Charlie. I think it is easy to be comfortable in America but these diseases are real and still exist and it doesn't take much to bring them here.. look at the examples in the article about the measles and Hib. Anyways, this discussion could go back and forth forever.

I think the girls on here are informed on their decision to vax or not. It bothers me if some decides to do vax or not by an off comment from a celebrity or chiropractor.

Robin-thanks for sharing that article, it brought up some interesting issues.

Christie-I am with you, I really wish there were more clearcut answers. I think every parent has to weigh the risks of vaccinating vs. the risks of not vaccinating. I know that if Avery had any kind of medical issues, and/or if we had any developmental disorders or Austism in the family, we would probably lean toward not vaccinating.

Caleb had his 15 month checkup yesterday & I expressed my concerns/fears regarding the mmr and just discussed vaccines in general. To sum up, we've decided to delay the MMR & will revisit it at his 18 month checkup. I am very pleased that I got no push back from the pedi.

Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete are going to be on Oprah this Friday talking about Autism. I'm not sure how much of the show will focus on the vaccines, but thought I would let everyone know about it!
