Cassie, I've read that in a couple of places - that children are born with a susceptibility for certain disorder, and that a vaccine can trigger that disorder. I imagine someday they'll figure out how to do genetic testing to figure those things out! Science is pretty amazing.

Cassie, what you have heard about sids and reactions is what my doctor thinks is occuring but they have not yet isolated that gene. This is why I am so worried because if it is genetic, I have a nephew that had a reaction

All I can do to ease my mind is to say its in God hands and it really is. I know in my heart that if something happens to Rhylee then that was God's plan even though I may never understand it.

Hi Girls~
Like i have said before, I have mixed feeings on this issue, but was researching and found this article to address some of my concerns.

http://www.cogforlife.org/epidemstudy.htm

"Virologists and epidemiologists who have studied these areas have found that when a certain percentage of a population is vaccinated, the spread of the disease is effectively stopped. Taking all data into consideration, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) along with the World Health Organization (WHO) has established desired thresholds for various diseases. The thresholds for just some of the diseases are shown below."

They also posted this chart, basically stating that if a certain percentage of the population is vaccinated, it does protect the population as a whole from those diseases spreading.

Disease & the Level of Herd Immunity Required (Percentage of Population Immune)
Influenza 75%
Chickenpox 80%
Diphtheria 85%
Measles 83-94%
Mumps 75-86%
Rubella: 83-85%

This is another interesting site with FAQs about MMR & autism diagnosis

Another thing to consider about the chicken pox is that once you've had them, you are susceptible to shingles as an adult. My dad got shingles and was literally on his death bed for almost a month. It was awful. I don't know if any research has been done yet on people who have gotten the vaccine getting shingles, but I guess the hope would be that if you're vaccinated for pox, you wouldn't get shingles later on in life either.

Emily- It is actually the complete opposite. If you are given the chicken pox vaccine you are carrying that virus so even if you were never to get chicken pox you now CAN get shingles. So if everyone was to get vaxed for it everyone could get shingles which is much worse than chicken pox.

30% of people are automatically immune to chicken pox as myself. I was tested when pg and never had them and was told that. So 30% of the population, almost 1/3 wouldn't ever get chicken pox therefore never be able to get shingles. That is why a lot of organizations are outraged over the chicken pox vaccine.

Cassie- I saw your post to me in the other thread. I think there are only a few manufactures of vaccines. Maybe two that I can think of. I would have to look into that though.

However I do know other countries don't require nearly as many vaccines as we do here in America. They also demand the MMR are all separate given as 3 separate shots. One of the reasons they feel in studies the mixing of the vaccines is what is causing the high rate of Autism and problems here. They refuse to separate the vaccines here because they feel a parent will not return for all those visits to have them separately. Instead actually they give 5 more with the MMR on the same day which probably makes it even worse. If it is much safer I think a parent definitely would return for all those visits. From what I have read it's all about doing as much as they can in one visit. Less time for the doctor & more money. Just what I have read.

I meant to post my Dad never had them forgot a word.

Judith - I don't know that is something passed on but both my brothers and I had them and all of my Dad's sister's had it growing up too so it seems like my Dad was the only who didn't get them. That would be great if Mason was immune too.

Robin- I was thinking since I BF him you are to pass immunity that way. Oh well if he isn't I am not worried about it since it really isn't a big deal to get. My DH didn't get them until 18 years old and they weren't that bad he said. I could imagine they are itchy though.

thanks for the link Lauren! I am going to really look into what ever vaccines she gets from now on. I'm not sure how many I'll give her (need to research) but that link will prove invaluable!

Cassie- About the SIDS..what causes it is a chemical imbalance in the brain of the SIDS child. Babies who don't have the chemical imbalance subconciously know that if they get face down or have something against their face that is obstructing their breathing, to move their heads. The SIDS babies don't know that. That's why they tell you to put you baby on it's back when it is sleeping, so if it does have that, then it is less likely to be fatal.

I had a friend whose baby died from SIDS a little over a year ago. Then I talked to the Pedi. about it and did some research about it.

Hope that helps

Chrystie - thanks! That does help! Hopefully my next one will just be a back sleeper! Or another one coming out holding its head up! Rhylee was a strong one so that really helped me worry less. Such a wiggle worm too (still is)!

Judith - Thanks! We actually have a Novartis plant right up the road from me, not sure what they make there, I didn't see their location on that site that was posted.

Rhylee has had 5 vacc.'s at 2 seperate visits, I don't know if there will be that many in the future, but I will possibly ask if we can maybe do it in like 2 visits instead.
