I am on the fence about vaccinating... I feel pretty strongly that we overvaccinate children, but don't know if I want to forego or delay vaccinating, or what, exactly. I did not know that babies are vaccinated against anything at birth. Will I be given the option prior to them giving the shot? Or is this something I need to bring up prior to birth?

I'm so glad I started reading this thread. I need to find a ped this week, so one of the questions I now plan to ask is the doctor's stance on vaccine choices.

I hate the fact that most people automatically accept what is the "norm" as being what is "correct". It makes it so much harder to make a personal decision! And, I'm trying to figure out Illinois laws on this. As a teacher, I have always been lead to believe that students are required to have all their vaccines in order to attend. I remember some of my students not being allowed to attend after not having their vaccs. by a certain date. However, I was at a private school at that time, so I don't know if it was an Illinois thing or a school decision.

Anyway, this is a great thread.

Sarah- Yes, make it known at the hospital if you do not want the Hep B, Vit K, or silver nitrate eye drops. I put it on my birth plan and the hospital was great with it and we passed on them all. When you are signing all your paper work that is where you give approval for the Hep B so make sure declined is checked. The only way your baby could get Hep B is from sex or drug use so they aren't doing that in the womb. The eye drops only protect against gonorrhea so if you don't have it your baby can't either. We also skipped the Vit K shot because it has been linked to the increase in childhood leukemia. They do it claiming it will clot your child's blood. My pedi even told me that shot was useless. He said it doesn't even work for over 72 hours. It is a very rare condition that effects less than 1 in 1,000,000 and my pedi said that after they do the heal stick test they will know if the baby's blood is clotting or not. Mason had a circumcision and no Vit K shot and he didn't bleed to death and healed fine As an extra precaution I ate extra leafy greens before my due date date that are full of real Vit K.

As far as schools go every public school has exemptions so you can attend any public school non-vaccinated. Some private schools you can do the same. However the children you are speaking about probably already began getting vaccinations so they had to get their boosters by the required time to stay in school.

GL with your research and we are here if you have any questions!!

Sarah, I would probably at least delay the vaccines since your boys will more than likely be born premature. Then that will give you more time to research and make a decision.

Wendy- Thanks for posting that!! Sorry I forgot to send it to you.

Sarah- I was going to say the same as Kristy earlier and I forgot. I would delay anything with a premature baby too. Then you can decide what is best for your family when they are past their due date.

Here's an example of a religious waiver for vaccinations that I found online :

Mr. & Mrs. John Smith
123 Alphabet Way
Anytown, NJ 12345
(555) 555-5555

Mr. Tom Jones, Ed. D., Director
George Washington School
456 Washington Avenue
Anytown, NJ 12345
(555) 555-0000

Statement Of Religious Objection To Immunization

In accordance with NJ State Statute 26:1A-9.1 1974, and Section 8:57-4.4
N.J.A.C. 1995, I hereby certify that the administration of vaccine and other
immunizing agents to my child, Breanna Paige Smith, is contrary to my
Religious beliefs, held either individually or jointly with others, and I
therefore request that my child be exempted from the school immunization
requirements of NJ State Statute 26:1A-9 1974, and Section 8:57-4.1 N.J.A.C.
1995.

We believe in God, and that God has created us in his image. In being
created in God,s image, we are given his perfect immune system. We are
bestowed with His gift, the immune system. I believe it is sacrilegious and
a violation of my sacred religious beliefs to violate what God has given us
by showing a lack of faith in God. Immunizations are a lack of faith in God
and His way, the immune system. I believe that receiving immunizations shows
God that I have no faith in His promises of protection for us, saying that I
trust man more than His holy words of protection for us. We believe in
Jesus, and his many promises of protection for us if we place our trust in
Him.

My religious beliefs are also based upon the understanding of what God
requires of them as provided for in the Bible.
1 Corinthians 8:6

Yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for
whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and
through whom we exist.
2 Corinthians 6:16-7:1

For we are the temple of the living God; and God said, " I will live in them
and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Therefore come out from them and be separate from them, and be separate from
them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; and I will welcome you, and
I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the
Almighty." Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves
from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the
fear of God.Romans 14:14

I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself;
but it is unclean for any one who thinks it unclean. 1 Corinthians 12:24-27

But God has adjusted the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior
part, that there may be not discord in the body, but that the members may
have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer
together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are in the
body of Christ and individually members of it.
1Corinthians 11:29-30

For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks
judgement upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some
of you have died.
Mark 2:17

And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not those who are healthy who
need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the
righteous, but sinners."
Mark 10:26-28

And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him " Then who can be
saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not
with God; for all things are possible with God."
1 Corinthians 2:5

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of
God.
Mark 5:34

And he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and
be healed of your disease." Ephesians 2:8-10

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own
dong, it is the gift of God - not because of works, lest any man should
boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for goods works,
which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Psalms 91:11

For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways.
Isaiah 58:11

And the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good
things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden,
like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

I swear that all the foregoing statements are true to the best of my
information, knowledge and belief.

I find it unfair that the only way for a child to attend public school non-vaccinated is to have a religious waiver. Reason being is that Jose and I are both atheists as adults, though we were both raised and baptized as catholics when we were children. We do not plan to baptize our daughter or any other children we may have.

So, besides lying (which we would refuse to do) how would we get around that issue?

Cristina - I forgot to mention this. California has a philosophical exemption which means you can not vaccinate just because you don't believe in it. We have religious, philosophical and medical waivers here.

Here's another awesome site with many waivers for the different reasons for not vaccinating, and for different ages. I also tells about the vitamin K shot and silver nitrate. This one is for California. http://www.vaclib.org/exempt/california.htm .

Here's the site that you can click on your state and find out the exemptions offered. http://www.vaccinetruth.net/

Thank you SO much Wendy. I greatly appreciate this!

I feel so much better about that subject.. well, so long as I live in California. :P

EDIT: I was reading on that last link you posted, its interesting that you need a specific birth plan submitted to the hospital if you do not want the Hep B shot, vitamin K injection, newborn screening, or the application of silver nitrate in the newborn's eyes. Kind of silly considering you ARE the parent and shouldn't need any paperwork at all except a solid "No".

Cristina - You're welcome . I'm glad I could help. Don't worry, no matter where you live in the U.S., you won't have to vaccinate Estrella. You may have to do more work to get around it (as far as registering her in school goes), but they can't make you. So has your DH agreed with you about not vaccinating now?
