Kristy- Well sounds like you had a better appt. this time. And you weren't fired!! Pretty nuts they admit your child doesn't need certain shots yet the do them routinely to other kids. My doctors office had me sign that waiver a few times too. Not at the last well check up though for some reason. At the 12 month check up they had 8 shots listed on the paper. That is so many at one time!! They are trying to pass a law in NJ to make 3 more vaccines madatory. Flu shot being one of them. It's crazy.
I just heard one mom at a playdate saying how she wouldn't allow them to give her daughter all the shots they wanted. She told them you can give her only three this time. I have also heard at least 7 moms that refused the MMR shot. So if parents keep speaking up and refusing things they are going to have to listen & make a safer vaccine schedule. It seems the people I know in real life that mostly decline the MMR are ones that saw with their own eyes it happen to family or friends children.
I saw it happen to two little boys I know with the MMR. Just recently a son of a co-worker of my husband's swears his son just slipped away after his flu shot. Stopped making eye contact, stop responding to his name, stopped talking, stop playing with his toys. He is now receiving detox at a NP office and is on the GFCF diet and is slowly coming back. Anyway, I hope something changes. I feel just terrible for all these families. Last edited by travelgirl : 01-08-2008 at 12:28 AM. |

Gosh Kristy, that is so crazy. I really dont understand why they even have that vaccine for babies at such a young age when they have such a low chance of ever getting Hep B. Well, besides from their moms.. I really hope there is no long term side effects that your nephew has to go through.
I for one am so glad that we came up with this thread, had it never been brought up I never would have thought to research vaccines. It feels so good to educate myself and not just agree with everything that the doctors say to do. Though I'd rather have Estrella completely vaccine free, Jose wanted her to have at least some vaccines. So we compromised and decided on a selective vaccine schedule with the help of "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Robert Sears. For awhile, Jose was on the same track with me about not vaccinating Estrella until age 2, at least that was what he wanted, I wanted no vaccines at all. But according to the book, Dr. Sears says that its pointless to "catch up" later because by the time the child is two, the child will be past the age of which the particular vaccines are most useful. After reading that, Jose changed his mind and wanted to vaccinate now. This is the schedule we have come up with with the help of the book and Estrella's current pedi: Birth - 1 month: Nothing 2 months: DTaP 3 months: Pc & HIB 4 months: DTaP 5 months: Pc & HIB 6 months: DTaP 7 months: Pc & HIB 15 months: Pc & HIB 10 years: Blood tests for measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, & Hep A immunity. (though I don't plan to give her the chickenpox or flu vaccine anyway - its just to see what immunities she has) 12 years: Hep B I considered this to be a very resonable schedule. Its not many doses at one time and it makes me less worried about it overwhelming her immune and nervous system. I was so glad to be able to decide on something we're both okay with (though when we're actually in the office, I am totally NOT okay with it at all) Just thought I'd post and update our vaccine situation since I hadn't before Estrella was born. |

Cristina- I was wondering what you were going to do. Sounds like you are happy with your decision and you feel a sense of control. Good for you! Sounds like you pedi is willing to work with you, too. I'm really hoping that's what I'm going to get out of this new place.
Friday we start at the new clinic. I am so hopeful that it is the place for us. We haven't met the doctor we will be seeing, but I chose her b/c her background is in pediatrics (everyone else is family practice.) I'm really hoping she is not as... extreme, shall we say... as the dr. I met at the consultation. I'm really looking forward to this appointment. If it doesn't work out, there is one place a bit closer that a friend recommended, but I like the idea of this one b/c I figure they know a lot about how to handle school issues for when that time arises. Speaking of which, have any of you thought about how exactly you plan to handle that when the time comes? |

Sarah, most states have religious, medical or philosophical exemption options. Both of my big girls are vaxed so I havent dealt with it yet, but my sister has. The state of Oregon doesnt have the phil. exemption and I wont lie about religious so I may have to battle a little since I dont have "proof" that medically it is not okay for Mia

I'm just seeing this now. But Sarah I would love to hear what you learn too. Today Nate's preschool started handing out the papers for next year. Of course there is a vac. sheet in there and I'm sure we will have problems arise because of our current choices with vaccinating. As well as with Ethan too. I know they were not pleased we did not vaccinate Nate this year for the flu shot.
kedney-sounds like it went a little better this time. that's helpful at least. |

Now THAT scares me. The schools are complaining about flu shots now? I don't even get flu shots -- they just never made any sense to me. I don't understand how you can vaccinate against the flu anyway...it's not one illness... |

Lisa- From what I hear is you will never be able to get a medical exemption from every vaccine. It has to be proven that your child is allergic to it and that can't be the case with all of them.
I am claiming religious exemptions. How I look at it is religion is YOUR beliefs and I don't beleive in vaccines!! I don't think there is any lie there. My one friend lives in New York state and was all nervous when enrolling her daughter in school. She wrote a letter claiming religious exemptions and they never even said a word to her. My chiro has 6 kids with 2 of them in college, 2 in high school, one in preschool and one newborn all non vaccinated. He said once you claim religious exemptions they can't questions your beliefs so there is no issue. |
