Judith - That is weird that they would give more vaccines because of that. If the children were ending up with the illnesses after getting the vaccines, wouldn't they already be immune since they got the illness and survived?

Who posted about the Oprah show? (I forget.) Whoever it was, thank you! DH and I sat and watched it this evening. He became so interested in the topic and had all sorts of questions throughout. He told me he was really glad I refused the Hep B vaccine at our boys' birth, and now believes it is worth researching vs. following the mainstream way of thinking.
When Joel and Evan were born, I really had to stand my ground in order to not have the Hep B vaccine. I originally told them no Vit. K or (what else) is done at birth. The nurse sat there and argued with me; I was so exhausted (contracting up a storm at the time) that I finally agreed to both things that are done besides Hep B. She had assured me that they do not use the silver nitrate eyedrops. She told me what they use instead (just remember it starts with an A), and I asked what are the side effects? Her answer was, "Oh, I've never heard of it having ANY side effects." When another nurse walked in, she told the lady that I was refusing vaccs (in a really snotty way); that lady was more polite but both convinced me to go ahead with the non-vaccs. I couldn't believe how pressured I was. (By the way, the boys seem fine; no side effects from what they had.) To pressure me, the nurse finally said that the only way they could go ahead with the c/s was for me to agree to it; otherwise they would have to track down a pediatrician to talk to me about my choice before they would allow me to deliver (which would delay things several hours.) Since I didn't yet have my ped at the time, they would have to "search" for one. Exhausted, I just agreed to the Vit. K and whatever. While in NICU, I had to sign paperwork multiple times saying that I had refused the Hep B vaccine. At one point, the doctor came in and "consulted" with me about my choice. He wanted to know if I was afraid of it causing autism. I answered, "I'm not worried about that with the Hep B vaccine, but I refuse to give any vaccinations to a premature infant." As I recall, even the American Academy of Pediatrics (?) advises that preemies NOT be vaccinated! Prior to changing hospitals, we again had to sign our consent waiver, then had to go through the same argument and paper signing at the new hospital at both intake and discharge. Finally, one of the nurses said to me, "Okay, it's fine if you refuse it here. Dr. K (pediatrician) will deal with you when you see him." And this is all just for the Hep B vaccine! The worst part to me is that the nurses are completely uninformed about what the side effects of any of these vaccines are. The doctors only seem to know people are "worried about autism", nothing else. And when you sit there and voice your opinion, they treat you like you are a jerk that is going to end up killing your kid because of your ignorant decisions. |

Sarah - It was Judith who posted about the Oprah show.

Sarah - Good for you! That is so terrible how they push and push without even attempting to respect your decision. Those babies are yours and they have no right to tell you what to do with them. I hope that you did/do find a pediatrician who is more sympathetic/empathetic to your choices and reasons why you may not vaccinate. I wish you well.

I missed the Oprah show, if anyone notices it coming on again please let me know.
Sarah, sorry about the hard time you were given but good job standing your ground. I am so stressed over Jack's 6 month check-up coming up. He has had a cough for 4 weeks (I keep joking he has pertussis even though he has had 2 vaccines against it - it isn't a bad cough) so I am going to tell her he is sick and I am not giving him them while he is sick. Maybe that will buy me more time until she fires me |

Sarah- I am so sorry about the hard time you were given. I have heard stories about the high pressure the nurses give at birth. I was prepared to call an attorney if I had to from the hospital but all was fine for me. My chiro & his wife (who is also a chiro and against vaccines) were both forced into the eye drops & Vit K so don't feel so bad. It's nuts though. Like Rebecca said they are YOUR babies not theirs.
The nurses won't sign something saying they will take full responsibility if something was to happen to your babies so they should get NO say in the matter!! I don't understand why they care so much. It makes no sense about c-section babies needing eye drops either. Or any baby needing a Hep B shot since a baby could not have it or get it without sex or IV drug use. I agree these nurses are NOT educated on vaccines at all. Glad you stuck your ground on Hep B. You are 100% correct about premiees and vaccines. Like Jenny Mc Carthy was saying on Oprah how can these vaccines be "one size fits all" As far as them saying your surgery would be delayed if you didn't want the Vit K?? What a bunch of crap. Wow they really were making things difficult for you. I'm so sorry about the added stress they gave you just before something so emotional & scary for you as it was. My pedi even said the Vit K won't work for 72 hours and you are circ. at 24 hours and no one bleeds to death so the Vit K shot doesn't work. He told me there is more Vit K in colostrum than that shot anyway. I was very lucky my hospital respected my choices 100% and never said a word to me and just had me sign waivers for the hep B, eye drops, & the Vit K shot. There have been some very good books mentioned on here by Gina & Kritsy that you and DH can read to help make your decisons before the boys 1 month check up. |

Hannah gets some of her shots, and hopefully I can convince DH that she doesn't need ALL the ones they recommend, but I thought I would share this story over here.
Hannah got shots on Friday and threw up on Saturday so I called the nurse line for our ped. I usually really like the nurses who call me back but this one said, "well it wasn't the shots that made her throw up. She probably caught a virus while she was in the dr. office." What a bunch of B.S. We were in the dr. office for a/b 3 minutes, in the WELL CHILD waiting room anyway. And my poor friend gave her son the Rota-teq shot b/c she didn't know anything a/b it and she, DH, and DS all got soooo sick. |

Hi gals, I have been reading up on the posting under this thread. WOW, I have always vaccinated my children. BUT I am strongly considering not continuing. I know when I spoke to our doctor's in the past, they always say the pros out way the cons. I don't think so! Anyway, Kedney you are a L&D nurse aren't you? What was it that swayed you not to vaccinate anymore? Thank you for all this informative info.

Kelly - The rotovirus vaccine is the first one that my sister refused. After that, she decided not to give Samuel any more of his shots. I hope your dh is open to all of this. Maybe if you got one of the books that Kristy read, that would help your dh.
Kristy - Of course not all nurses!! Last edited by rac : 09-19-2007 at 03:04 PM. |

They have a vaccine for that now?!?
You know, I never thought a/b this at all until they came out w/the chicken pox vaccine. My brain just couldn't understand what would be the purpose of vaccinating for a non-life threatening illness (yes, I KNOW there are people who've had very SEVERE cases). I got really upset when they made it a requirement for school admission. And then the flu shot... I just never could wrap my brain around it. I'll have to do a case-by-case study; this topic has surfaced something that has tugged at my brain for the past 8 or 9 years (whenever the chicken pox vaccine came out -- I don't remember exactly).
