Default October Toddler Chat

I finally made some progress with Jonathan on potty training...he's been pooping on potty for almost 2 weeks straight, no accidents. But he refuses to pee in it. He's addicted to pull-ups and could care less when he's wet. I tried the whole naked thing before but he HATES being naked (weird toddler, I know) and I don't want to torture him and make him resent the process. I was thinking maybe trying the swim diapers (which are like pull-ups, but not absorbant) for regular use and see what happens when he starts leaking in them. Just tell him he's getting too big for pull-ups and they are leaking....time to use the potty? Maybe that will encourge him to use the potty? Any other ideas??

Just switch to undies, that is what we had to do, it will mean a little extra laundry for a little bit, but a diaper is a diaper (and a pull up is a diaper), and they know it and will use it.

Thye feel the wettness and stuff more with real pants and undies. At least if he is pooping in the toilet you won't have REAL messes to claen up like we did.

Also, just have him sit on thetoile tevery 60 to 90 minutes, wether he has to go or not, and have a BIG party when he does it.

And I don't know, since I had a girl go first, but maybe have Daddy show him how big boys pee, and give him some Cheerio targets in the big toilet to "Shoot Down" to make it more interesting!

Thanks, Jess! We tried switching to undies too before, but he got VERY discourged and refused to have any part in potty training after that. We had to take a break for a couple of months and just started again a couple of weeks ago, that's when he started pooping on the potty. He also knows exactly when he needs to go and will not go in there to "just try and see". He refuses and says but I don't need to go....and he's right. He knows when he needs to go, just won't do it right now for pee-pees. I thought maybe if his beloved pull-us start failing him he might give up and use the potty. Same idea as undies (as far as being wet/leaky), I don't know...worth a shot I guess! At least we are halfway there since he poops on it!

Hi, ladies. I need advice from those of you with older babies; I might post this in the toddler side, also. Ely is BITING at daycare. It started with just a few bites on kids hands or knees, but yesterday he bit a 3 month old girl on the face. I dont know what to do; he has only bit me once, and I said "no" very sternly (and he cried---he hates when I say No), but since I am not the one there, I just dont know how to deal with this. I want him to have friends and I want the girls that work at the daycare to like him, and no one is popular when they bite! He is getting 3 teeth all at once---two front molars and one of his teeth next to the front teeth. I am hoping that is the problem, but that is still no excuse for biting. Any advice????

Krissy - from what I have read, biting is a natural way for a baby/toddler to express frustration esp. before they can talk. It can also be a sign of wanting attention. Matthew used to bite objects - the couch, pillows etc. when he was frustrated, so even though he wasn't biting people he did it. I would watch him and try to help him before he got so frustrated he bit, we also used redirection with him when he did - I would say "we don't bite!" and then assisted him with whatever was frustating him. I think all kids go through a phase and teething only makes it worse. The best advice is to try and avoid the behavior by watching Ely and trying to prevent it from happening by using redirection etc. The daycare workers should know what sets him off - frustration, attention? - and should be able to intercede before he bites someone. Biting behavior in no way should reflect poorly on a parent - all kids do it! GL.

Hannah is going to get tubes in her ears and her adenoids removed next Thursday. Most people tell me it's a piece of cake and that their kids are so much better afterwards. I will still be a nervous wreck until it's over with.

Kelly--I am so sorry to hear that Hannah has to go through that! Ely got his tubes at 6 months old, but did not do the adenoids. He has never had another ear infection since! Our biggest problem was that he couldnt eat from midnight until the procedure at 7:30, but with Hannah that shouldnt be as much of a problem since she is older. I will warn you, when they first come out of the anesthetic, they can be sort of wierd. Ely was like a feral cat--clawing his face, screaming, and just wild eyed. It didnt last long, and then he returned to normal and didnt seem to remember anything. He was in a considerable amount of pain for about a day, but most people say their children are running around fine that afternoon, so maybe that was partly because of his age and some other health issues he was dealing with. In the long run, it was a hard day to get through, but I am SO glad we did it. He has been like a totally different, happier baby since he had them done. I hope you feel the same way. PM me if you have any questions that you think I could answer. It is so hard to do it!

Kelly-Im 10 years older than my brother so i remember him having his adenoids & tonsils removed. i was 14 at the time and i dont recall the healing process but i do recall him being sick much less and a HUGE improvement in his speech. I know he wasn't down for too long so hopefully Hannah will be herself within a day or two and be so much the better for it. Good luck. You guys will be in my thoughts.

Thanks Krissy, Allison, and Amber! I know it will be better in the long run, I just have to cry a couple of times a day.

Kelly, I have never had my kids go through it but my cousins did and he was so much better after surgery. He came out and asked for pizza and was running around the hospital before they could get him checked out.
Fair warning though, when Molly had her tonsils out 2 years ago her breath smelled SOOOOOO bad.

Kelly... I'm sure it will be fine, and she will be no worse for the wear.

Kelly- Hope the surgery goes well! Everything I hear about tubes is that the kids are so much better afterwards.

Jonathan is 100% potty trained . He tells you when he needs to go and everything. It was really easy once he was "ready"...it just took a good 6 months of getting him ready to get there!

Dh and I just got home from a great vacation in Cozumel! We had a blast!

Jack was completely potty trained 10 days before we left and luckily he didn't have any accidents while with my mom!

Going to catch up on all the posts and get back to reality....
