I am getting worried. I know that every child is different but Madison knew all her colors but Lela age. Madison could count to 20, say her abc's but Lela talks much better than Madison did. Okay but here is what worries me. I have been trying to teach Lela her colors and she is just now getting it at all. Sometimes I think she might be starting to catch on but she is not. I have even picked up a purple block and tell her to find another on jsut like it and she just picks up any other block. I read that they don't start saying the colors until around 3 but she should be starting to get the idea of it. I am starting to worry that maybe she is color blind. I think it can be hereditary (sp) and I do have an Aunt and a first cousin who are both color blind.
I might just be over thinking things but it has me worried. Does anyone have any experience with this?? Oh and I was looking online and I never knew that there were different types of color blind where you can see colors. Its hard to explain but I took a few online test of matching up colors and it told me I had a blue/green color blind. What is funny about that is that there are many times that someone will say a color is blue or green and I will disagree and think it isn't. Okay I am sounding crazy here.

I don't know if she can tell yet, it seems early. DH has problems with reds blues and purples. You could show her some of thoese dot pictures and see if she can see the image in the dots. Not sure if they have kid friendly ones.

Rebekah - Thanks that was confusing but I think I understand lol. That makes me feel so much better. I guess I need to quit comparing what she can do to what Madison did.
Lauren - I will go try to find that link again. Cassie - Thanks. Thanks girls I feel so much better now. It is so nice to be able to share concerns here.

Lauren - Oh no I didn't it take it that way. I knew what you meant!!!!! I think that she is so busy that she doesn't want to take the time out to sit still to even try to learn too.
Here is the link RGB Anomaloscope — Color Blindness Test Here were my results Thank you for taking the test. You matched one or two values which means you have only a weak red-green color blindness or aren't colorblind at all.

Robin -I'm sorry you are worried. I sometimes bring it up to parents when I have kids who still don't know their colors by the middle of kindergarten after I have already spent a long time teaching it to them and they still don't get it. I really don't know anything about it though. I think she's got plenty of time to catch on. I was saying something about it to my mom the other day - that I need to teach Hannah her colors - she said she's too young (I know she's much younger than Lela, but they're both young). I just try to name colors when we're playing or getting dressed.

Kelly - Thanks!! I guess I worried because Madison knew them by this age and I thought that was the right age but I guess she just was early at that. Madison has always and she still is very interested in learning. Lela doesn't want to be bothered. Today Madison was bringing me her books to work on her reading.

Robin, I have worried so much about the things that Molly could do by one age that Morgan couldnt. Like Molly was reading by pre-k and Morgan just grasped it half way through kindy. I have started to learn that they just are really way to differant to compare. Morgan is so much more coordinated than Molly so she is doing things like shoe tying way earlier. Also now that Morgan is reading she is going a lot faster than Molly did.
That being said, since I teach 3 and 4 yr olds I know that a lot of kids that age just dont have the desire to learn colors yet. I would try to just teach her 1 color at a time, like pink since all girls seem to love pink and just go at her pace. I have a feeling that Lela is a lot like Morgan and when she is ready to learn she will amaze you |

Lisa - Thanks so much. It is so hard not to compare. Wow Molly really started reading early!!! Lela doesn't seem to have a long enough attention span. She gets bored so easy and doesn't play with the same toy for longer than a minute (unless it is her Dora house and dolls she loves them) Maybe I should try to teach her the color of Dora's house.
Thanks so much girls for all the great support and advice!!!!!

Teaching her Dora's house color is great! Or maybe the color of Dora's backpack or hair. I think with Lela one day she will say "Mommy I want a red shirt" or something crazy and you will never know when she learned them all. She is really smart so you will just be suprised someday.
Also, I feel your pain on how hard it is not to compare. I still do it almost daily but I am having an easier time lately when I stop to think about how differant they truely are. |

Lisa - I was totally laughing when you said she would say "I want to wear a red shirt" because that sounds so much like something she would say lol.
I feel so much better now. You girls are the best

Robin- I think it would be very rare that Lela is color blind as well. Beyond the blue/green thing you have.
BTW: Great explaination tweety. I think colors can be hard to teach and some kids pick up on one thing easy and other things not so easy. In our playgroup it seems 50% of the kids by 24 months know their colors. There are many toys you can test & teach color with. The best I have found is something where the item is the same over & over and just the color changes. Mason has a puzzle of solid color fish from Melissa & Doug and you have to put the corect fish with the correct color. Mason doesn't say all his colors yet but he always matches them up correctly in this puzzle. Discovery toys makes a toy where it has different color balls to match up to holes and if they mix blue & purple up it is usually an early sign. Try any learning store for color teaching toys. Mason also has an ice cream cone set that all the scoops of ice cream are different colors and I teach him them like that too. Now I have to check out that test you posted |

Robin, I was actually beginning to worry about Nate and his colors too. I've been trying to teach him shapes and colors for awhile and he doesn't seem to be getting his colors at all. He will randomly say "blue" or "red", but I can tell he isn't getting it at all. I've actually started researching if Nate was color blind as well, and some of the articles I've read that it's a hard concept for them to grasp. I know it's so hard not to compare because my friend's daughter who is a week older than Nate started saying her colors at the age of 16 months. Now, she is literally saying complete sentences such as "My shoes don't have laces." Nate's barely putting two word phrases together. Alright, I think I got completely sidetracked, but I don't think you should worry about Lela being colorblind. If you're still concerned, I think you should take her to the pediatrician to be safe.

Judith - I will have to look for some of those toys. What is hard is that Lela doesn't want to play with "baby" toys she wants to play with her sister's big girl toys lol. Maybe if it is something new she will be interested in it. Sounds like Mason is doing really good with his colors.
Amy - We always have something to worry about huh? I am not going to take her to the doctor now every one here really made me feel so much more relaxed about it. I am sure Nate is fine too. What is funny is she knows the names of colors because I will ask her What color is your shirt and she will answer me with a color just not hte right one lol. Cassie - The first time I took the test that is the answer I got too. Then I took it again and paid closer attention to the exact shade of color and noticed that there was just a very small difference. It think I only had one or two matches the second time. I wonder if it could be a difference in our computer screens and the color shades??
