Default Photography Tips

We all love taking and sharing pictures of our loved ones, and several people in different threads have commented on wanting to start a tips thread so I figured I would get one going! I am by NO MEANS into photography, but with a little one on the way I am wanting to get better so I don't miss those oh so precious moments. Here is one sight that seems helpful to me:

When I had DD's infant pictures done, the photographer put on soft, thin gloves to do it. She said it helps the baby stay asleep when cold hands aren't touching their bare skin. I thought that was a great idea!!

My Dh is a photographer, if you have any questions you'd like me to pass along to him, he'll be happy to answer them.

Mere-thanks so much. If I ask too many questions just tell me to quit!!

I am having trouble with my pictures coming out too dark. I have a canon xti dslr. I'm thinking I need to get a flash unit. Can he recommend what to look for in a decent (not top of the line, but not something that will make me nuts in 6 months) flash? What is a decent re-charge time, etc.?

Lisa - He says try to take picture at a slight angle, so that the flash's reflection bounces away from the camera, not back toward it. Also, if it's a posed shot, you can just slightly tilt the glasses downward, just a touch, so it won't look odd in the pic, but the lenses won't reflect that way.

Kristy - I have a point and shoot just for my own use and quick snapshots. He actually just gave it to me for Christmas! He is the family's primary picture taker though, and he has this camera:

Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR

This is my point and shoot:

Nikon USA: COOLPIX P50

And we have this video camera:

Consumer Camcorders - High Definition Camcorders - DVD Camcorders - Single Chip CCD Digital Camcorders - High Definition Camcorder - HV20 - Canon USA Consumer Products

Lisa-I have the canon xti and I like it pretty well. it isn't huge to carry around, but still allows me to do some creative things. Just my opinion.

Kristie, I looked at that one as well as the Nikon D40. I have been wanting one for a while and the ILs gave me some money for Christmas so I think I may invest in one soon. Thanks!

Anyone have a Sony CyberShot? I used mine for the first time today and my pics are very blurry. The school has one I've used and it worked great, but I can't get my hands on it for over a week. I don't know which setting my camera should be on for most pics. Right now, it is pointing to ISO. Which setting would be better for most pic?
