Default The Reflux Club - Q&A for babies with Reflux/GER/GERD

Hey! There seem to be quite a few people on here with babies who have Gastroesophageal Reflux. I thought it would be good to have a thread for us to ask questions of each other/ get support for those extra hard days/nights/weeks

My baby, CJ, was diagnosed with Reflux last Monday, Feb. 4th, just short of 2 months old. The Dr. prescribed .4ml Zantac 2X a day. A week later it hasn't seemed to make much difference I called the Dr. and they are calling in a prescription for Prevacid Solutabs for us to try next. Dissolve in 1 tsp. water and give 1/2 of the solution, once a day ( throw out the leftover half ). So, we'll see how that goes, once the roads are clear from this snow storm, and I can go to Kewanee to get the prescription .

Jess- I have heard it takes the zantac up to two weeks to start working. I did see a difference after a bit with Mason. Of course they make many others because not all work for every baby. Mason switched to prilosec for a bit and he got much worse. I heard the prevacid works great!! Lou just puts the tablet in her daughters' cheeks to disolve. Maybe that dose would be too much for CJ?? I wonder if you could use half a tablet??

My girls are on the solutabs. They take half a tab in the morning and half at night. Like Judith said, I just dissolve it in their cheek. Hope it helps her!

Rhylee is on Zantac .5ml 3X's a day. I think it helps her in some ways, but she seems to spit up more since she's been on the medicine.

I think she has the Silent Gurd cause she hiccups so much and she used to just make the "I threw up in my mouth" face without spitting up.

Well, I am pretty upset. At her noon and then at her 3 pm feeding today, CJ did fine for the first 5 to 10 minutes, and then started screaming/pulling off/pushing me away for the rest of the time . Then I would put her up to burp her, thinking that was her issue, and she would scream her hungry cry , while I was burping her, and then I would calm her, and put her back down to feed, and she would take two sucks and start screaming again ! It didn't matter which side either . DH came home early and gave her a bottle for the remainder of her 3 pm feeding...she ate about 1.5 oz. from that, cried for a while after and then went to sleep for a LONG nap. Then at her 5:30 feeding, she started the screaming and pushing me away bit right off the bat, she wouldn't take the breast at all!!!

Usually she nurses for 20 min. straight, and we only have ever done one side per feeding (considering I can pump 4.5-5 oz from one side in 15 min, she should be getting plenty!). So at 5:30 she wouldn't take the boobie at all, so she finished the other 1.5 oz from the earlier bottle, and then we refilled from the frozen stuff, and she ate 2 more oz. She took the bottles just fine...so I don't know if it was because she could be tilted upright more and on her back, or what !?

DH had cooked while I was feeding her the bottle (Thank goodness for the snowstorm bringing him home early today! ). Then, we ate dinner with her sitting in her high chair and just looking around, and DH cleaned up with her just sitting there in the chair watching him (she would never do that for me! ) while I pumped both sides, getting 5 oz from the side she was supposed to nurse from, and 4 from the other side. I didn't freeze it, thinking we might need it in case she refuses the boobie later. I sure hope this isn't a trend . She is due to eat again any time now, but we gave her her Zantac at 7, and after a little fussing about it, she is asleep and snoring on DH ?!

Lou, as for the solutabs, I hope they work for her, I hate to see her in so much pain. And she HATES the extreme mint flavor of the Zantac, what do the solutabs taste like? They told me I have to dissolve one in one tsp. of water, and then give her half that soultion, once a day, and toss out the rest....seems like a waste...I'd think it would accomplish the same thing if I split the tablet in half, and dissolved half of it in half a tsp. of water?! Rather than waste the other half.....I am sure its not cheap .

We're back to having reflux issues here too! I thought she would out grow it, but no dice yet. They said she is on the max. dose of Zantac for her size. She isn't spitting up b/c she is on Reglan too, but I can hear the puke come up to her throat and then go back down. She is back to arching her back and has hiccups all the time now too. It makes me so sad, especially since her regular ped. is on maternity leave. She is the best dr. ever and her sub doesn't like giving kids medicine for reflux. I had to call back and talk to the nurse and she had to go to another dr in the office to even get the Reglan increase so she wouldn't throw up. I think b/c she is growing so much the sub dr. thinks she doesn't really have the reflux.
To make matters worse, she is waking up 2-3 times per night now, and she hasn't done that regularly since she was a week old (I'm very lucky, I know). What bothers me (in additiont o me nt sleeping) is that she is used to getting 9-12 hours per night, and she isn't getting that, so she is very clingy and cranky!
Do you think I should call the nurse again tomorrow? Sorry for the marathon post girls!
I was just thinking today it would be good to have a thread like this, I'm so glad you started it Jess!

I was going to mention that it seemed wasteful to throw out half when you could easily split the pill. When they were first getting it they got 1/2 a tab a day and that was increased to a whole tab twice a day when they got older. I don't see what the harm would be. My doc didn't give specific instructions on how to do it...he said whatever worked for us. I guess when she gets a little bigger you can give it to her the other way. It dissolves really fast. It tastes like strawberry and really isn't that bad. I tell my girls it's a sweetart. I really hope it works for you!

Cassie,

CJ gets hiccupps a ton too, and also makes the I" puked in my mouth" face , too. Also, you can hear her do little pukes and then "glup", swallow them back down again. Poor little things. She also chokes/gags while feeding often, and sometimes in the middle of sleeping. Lately she has been refusing the pacifier in favor of trying to shove her fist down her throat, while crying, which I have also seen listed as a Silent Reflux symptom. Really, she hardly ever spits up; and when she does, it usually isn't much, but it usually IS very curdled and full of mucous, and she cries afterward.

Well, i guess Tammy was right, though for the life of me I don't know what I ate, but after those 3 "bad" feedings, she has been fine from 12 midnight feeding on. But she has had LOTS of very stinky gassy poops today, 5 already!!!! So I guess it was something I ate

maybe onions or something jess, you never know what is really in something if you dont make it yourself. Alyssa hated when I ate spicy chicken....yummmmmmmmm. as for the hiccups Alyssa had them i think like 20 times a day in the beginning, they get to the point where it sounds like she is making a popping sound the hiccups decreased around 5 months old and is getting better. My Dr told me they should grow out of them around 4-8 months old

oh almost forgot. ANY gassy food, doesnt matter if it doesnt bother you, could be upsetting babies tummy too! you just have to figure out what

Judith, I was thanking my mom for being so helpful and good with CJ and telling her I am thankful she is a good Gramma, and was looking back at your early posts about your Mom telling you you were starving Mason, etc., and lately the whole spit up/drying the pee pee outfit, ect! Mom was like and said your Mom was dysfunctional and she was amazed at how storng you are and how great you do with Mason!

Just wanted to tell you that My Mom is proud of you, and so am I!

Also, as I was looking back at your really early posts with Mason and figuring out his Reflux etc. MAN! I wish I had seen those earlier with CJ, maybe I would've put 2 and 2 together and got her diagnosis earlier than 2 months into it all! SO many symptoms exactly alike....only differences is that she didn't spit up much, and she slept better, BUT the eating and crying and fighting the boobie and shoving the hand in the mouth, etc! WOW! Maybe now that we have the Reflux Club Thread other new moms with this issue will see our kids symptoms earlier and be able to get their babies help faster. Actually I hope no one else on the boards has this issue with their babies, the Reflux club is big enough already!

Lou, we are starting the Prevacid, now, gave first dose yesterday. We have the Solutabs and they told me to dissolve the whole tab in 1 tsp. of water, then give her 1/2 of that solution, and throw the rest out.....WELL, it is really hard, cause I THOUGHT it would be completely dissolved, like when you make saltwater, but it doesn't, it is still little granules, so you have to try to get half of them out of the water and part of the water too....UHG! What a pain in the butt! So today I think we will try cutting it in half first. How little were your girls when you started just wetting it and putting it in their mouths....??? I am worried if it won't dissolve all the way that she might choke? She is 2+ months now. I guess we could try it....I did try cutting it yesteday, and it doesn't cut very evenly, and kind-of crushes a bit.

Jess- That was really sweet of your mom & you to say. Thank you. Hopefully new mom will reconize the signs earlier with this thread too. How is CJ doing on the prevacid?

Quote:
I may just cut it in half today and smoosh it up dry, put it in her medicine dropper and add a little water to the dropper, and then squirt it in her mouth.
Well I tried that...I guessI removed my finger from the end of the dropper too soon , or she tongue thrusted just as I got it there, cause all the medicine granules ended up all over her chin and neck! UUHHGGG! So, I did like Lou says she used to do...i took the other half, dipped it in water, put it in her tongue and popped in her pacifier. Worked like a charm. Dr's and pharmacists obviously have never tried to give this stuff to a baby, probably haven't even seen what it dissolves like

Jess, glad it worked to just pop it in! Try rubbing it on the inside of her cheek...I know it dissolves better that way. I used to do the same thing...pop it in and then the soothie! Hope she keeps taking it well. I'm so nervous about not giving it to my girls. I hope it goes well and they no longer need it!
