Jo--No, he either sleeps on someone, or in a stroller/carseat for naps. I know; terrible habits, but he was so sick and would get such terrible heartburn being laid flat. Now that he can lay on his tummy I don't feel like I am hurting him to lay him down. I actually think that it will be easier for us to start with nights; naps are just so hard to get him to sleep for no matter where he is sleeping.
Jess--That is really cool; do you all get to have a copy of the pic's? Well, Ely did take a nap at daycare today. He fell asleep taking his bottle (he was exhausted from swim class this morning), and they laid him on his tummy. When I got there he in such a good mood and was KISSING a baby girl! It was SOO cute--though I will admit I immediately worried about germs |

Hello ladies!
My first post as a mommy on the baby side Ok so I have a BFing question. Nursing is going well, no issues there. She eats well (and constantly it seems). My only problem is that I leak ALL the time and it is A LOT. I feel like I am changing through nursing pads every hour or so and I am leaking not only through the nursing pads, but also a padded bra and my clothes as well, all day long! I have been doubling up on the nursing pads. I put one over the nipple and one overlapping it sightly below it to catch the milk when it leaks but it leaks out of all sides. Am I maybe using the wrong pads? I have tried the reusable/washable kind and that didn't work because I leaked right through my clothes and had to wring out the pads they were so full! So I have been using the disposable gerber pads and doubling up but that's just not working either... Any suggestions? I haven't started pumping yet because I seem to remember them saying that u should wait 3-4 weeks before pumping, and she just turned 2 wks yesterday. I didn't know if pumping would get rid of that extra milk and I wouldn't leak as much or if pumping would stimulate me to produce even more... Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not really sure what to do and everyone here that I ask is like "oh you're breastfeeding, that's what happens" and that makes me about as mad as when I was preggo and everyones answer to all of my questions was "its because you're pregnant"... That doesn't help! Lol Anyway, Alis is doing well. Had a bit of jaundice at first and she was losing a lot of weight, then she had an eye infection and her eye was oozing yellow ***** stuff, poor baby. The whole first week of her life was spent at the Drs office and the hospital, but I am happy to say she had her 2 wk check up yesterday and all is well! She is pretty much rid of the jaundice and is able to actually able to stay awake to eat now. She has gained back her birth weight plus some, and her eye is better now. She was 7 lbs 3 oz and 20 1/2 in at birth, and at her checkup yesterday she weighed 7 lbs 7.5 oz and was 21 in long! Hope everyone is doing well!! I haven't had time to read what everyone has been up to. |

Vickie - I cant help you on the leaking issue...I leaked but not nearly as much as you did. I used the Gerber reusable/washable pads and HATED them...they would itch me too and would not absorb. Now I use Avent disposable pads and I LOVE them. They absorb MUCH better than the others that I was using before. I just happened to try them and I love them. I got them from Target.
As far as the pumping goes, I have only pumped one time so I cannot help you with that one...sorry |

So my baby is officially 2 months today!
She is smiling now...I LOVE IT!!! So we had her 2 month check up and shots today. She is now 9 lbs 12 1/2 ounces and 22 1/2 inches long. She is in the 25th percentile for her weight and the 10th percentile for her height. My dr said the average is the 50th percentile but she said that she is not concerned as long as she is growing and there is no significant increase or decrease. So...then she had her shots. POOR BABY!!! She didnt do bad though. She cried when she was poked every time and when she had the oral vaccine, she didnt really care for it but took it anyway...then, DH was holding her and she was fine afterwards. She went to sleep in the car. She has no fever thank goodness but she is a little fussy. She has been sleep on and off now for almost 6 hours. She will get up to eat and then go right back to sleep. I know she is miserable. I was supposed to be going to the gym but I rather be with her this evening. Other than that, BF is going well...baby is doing well.....DH is doing well... No complaints... Im ready to pierce her ears now....LOL Jo - PM me your email address so I can add you to the babys website for pics and updates! Jess - We have been using Nestle Good Start and we have tried several kinds of Enfamil...I think she knows that it is NOT mommys milk. Dana - My mom was actually at work most of the day when she was there but I am starting to think that my stepfather overfed her now...ESPECIALLY since my grandpa told me he wanted to tell on him when I came back to pick her up... Daycare - So my aunt AND DH aunt are "candidates" for babysitting when I go back to work. My aunt works nights and his aunt doesnt work since she is back in school. We are going to talk to both of them and see what happens. I am soooooooooooo not looking forward to putting her in daycare...I dont think I can trust anyone with my LO. I just got a message from my aunt and she said she will charge us half of what daycare charges...not too bad... I guess we have to hear from his aunt now... We know it wont be free but we need to weigh ALL of our options... |

Vickie--your body will regulate eventually. DO NOT pump yet--if you are leaking now, pumping will stimulate your body to produce more and that could be a nightmare! The only pads that even kinda worked for me are the Johnsons ones. I hate all of them, though. I leaked pretty consistently for the first 8 weeks, then all of a sudden my body figured it out. Now I only leak when I hear a baby cry (ANY baby, Anywhere lol!) Glad to hear things are going well.
K--Congrats on two months. And sorry about the shots; I think they are harder on mommies than babies. So funny that she is 9.12. Ely was 9.9 when he was born, and over 10 lbs by the time we left the hospital! He never did lose weight like they say babies do the first few days. He is still such a big boy! |

Vickie - Good to see you on again! I agree, don't pump yet, you could end up with an oversupply, which is a real PITA, wait for amonth or so, and then , try to only pump when you skip a feeding, or if you are ALWAYS going to pump at that time, you can do an extra session on top of the normal feedings. As for the leaking, I use the Lansinoh brand disposable pads, and they hold alot, though I don' leak too bad, then only time I really had an issue, was when we were weaning CJ, I swear they weighed a couple pounds each whenever I replaced a feeding with the bottle.
Here is something you could usein the meantime till your body adjusts: http://www.mymilkies.com/ Then all that milk can be frozen and not go to waste! Well, we are starting CIO with Will, his afternoon nap, it took him 40 minutes to cry himself to sleep, and tonight it took 50 minutes. I am hoping he catches on as easily as CJ did (granted she was 7 months, not 5), it is SOOOOOOOO Hard to listen to them cry, bt i know how much better they sleep once they "get it". She got it in about 4 days, first night , she cried 45 minutes, 2nd - 20 min, 3rd - 10 min, and 4th - 5 min. Ever since that she has happily gone to sleep on her own, and LOVED her crib, and she's been a great sleeper from the first night we did CIO. Last edited by jrichards; 07-28-2009 at 09:24 PM. |

Jess-I remember you saying that Will won't take a bottle. Have you tried the breastflow bottle by the first years? Kelly recommended it and I LOVE it! Violet was gagging and having trouble with the other bottles because the nipples were too long, but she does great with this one. The nipples are short and the baby has to latch on like they are latching onto a breast and uses the same sucking motion as they do in bf and they control the flow. Not a single drop of milk pours out of her mouth with these.
Vicki-can't wait to see pics of Alis! In the beginning it is normal to have more leakage. I never leaked at all with Avery, but I usually leak in the mornings and if the baby goes a longer time than usual between feedings. Kanieka-that is great you have Aunts willing to watch K, I would love to have a family member watch my girls. Hi EOE. |

Vicki- As for the leaking, for disposable pads I like the Lansinoh ones. But the BEST solution I have found are these: Welcome to the LilyPadz® Website!
You don't leak at all with them! They are a silicon pad with a slightly sticky side. It basically kinks the hose (nipple folds so no leaking.) A set lasts up to two months; I only needed to buy one, b/c then my supply adjusted so I don't leak anymore (usually.) The price looks high at first glance, until you calculate how much disposable ones cost. These are much better and cheaper overall! I was so thankful to have them when I went for my six week checkup as well as a massage, b/c they stay on even when undressed (so no embarrassing leaks.) |

Vicki, I leaked REALLY bad with my first, I was going through a box a day for the first 6 months of nursing pads. The only ones that worked were the Johnsons ones. Also, when I nursed I put a cloth diaper or burp rag in the opposite side. It was really bad, to the point that I wanted to quit. I tried the lilypadz and thought there were okay, but I found them uncomfortable. Good Luck, I will be thinking about you because I know how much it sucks.

Wow, Jess. That milksaver is cool; I wish I had had one early on. I wonder if it would be comfortable to sleep with it on; I went for about a month when I dropped a middle of the night nursing where I would wake up SOAKED. It always felt like such a waste.

jess- i seen those milk savers in a magizine. have you tried them? i was wondering how they worked. they seem like a great idea but i wondered if they worked.
vickie- i think i leaked pretty bad. i used the disposable avent ones, but sometimes still leaked through. but those seem to be the most comfy. i thought a few of the other ones felt funny and stiff. a friend of mine actually used maxi pads at night during weaning cause she was leaking so bad |

Thanks for the tips ladies! I figured pumping would stimulate me to make more milk, I just wanted to make sure.
I'm looking into the lilypadz and milksavers, both seem to be good ideas I just dunno if I'm willing to spend so much just yet. DH is off today so I'm going to make a quick run to the store and look at nursing pads. The disposable Lansinoh ones seem to have good reviews online so I think I might try those for now. I just got on the scale. I'm only 9 lbs away from my pre-pregnancy weigh! Now if I could just lose about 50 lbs on top of that I'll be good. Lol |
