Default Amish Friendship Bread

Amish Friendship Bread Starter Recipe

On Day 1: In glass or plastic bowl, combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk. Stir mixture with wooden or plastic spoon (don't use metal spoon or electric mixer). Once mixed put mixture into large ziploc bag. Keep at room temperature (don't refrigerate).

On Days 2, 3, 4 and 5: mush the bag once each day.

On Day 6: Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour and 1 cup milk; mush the bag.

On Days 7, 8 and 9: mush the bag once each day.

On Day 10: Pour contents into large glass bowl. Add 1.5 cups sugar, 1.5 cups flour and 1.5 cups milk. Mix well. Measure 1 cup into 4 large ziploc bags and seal well. Keep 1 for yourself and give the other 3 bags away to friends, ( Print this section below in Purple to give to friends with the starter batter). This is the started base. Put todays date on the bag and keep track of the working days.

Remember : Save remaining 1 cup starter for yourself.

For more variations, add your favorite dried fruits, nuts and/or chocolate chips. Also experiment using different flavor pudding mixes.

Grease two 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pans. Mix 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1.5 tsp of cinnamon. Dust greased pans with 1/2 of this mixture. Pour batter evenly into both pans and sprinkle remaining mixture on top of batter.

Cool

this recipe is great, dh and I both LOVED IT!! I made a few cakes/breads.. I did find that the recipe calls for a little too much brown sugar to cover the pan and the top of the bread. NExt time Im using very little but other than that it was a hit! Oh and I found that the oven could have been set at 350 & not 375 like the recipe says. The 1st cake was a little crispy, so the 2nd one I lowered the temp and it was perfect.

I made 1 with choco chips and altered the 2nd batter for Alyssa and added, blueberries, grated apple & I also used 1/2 cup of oatmeal blended up like flour ( recipe called for 2 cups flour, so I used 1 1/2 cups flour and 1/2 cup oatmeal) I use whole wheat flour

Tammy - I am so glad you posted this. I haven't had Friendship Bread in years!!! I never knew how to start it. I think I may do it this weekend and give some to the neighbors. Good idea about adding blueberries and grated apples!

The Amish Biscuits came out great! I did end up having to use a bit more flour than the recipe calls for in order for the dough to unstick from the bowl I was mixing in. But all in all a very easy recipe to make, and Alyssa really liked it! I will try them on dh later with dinner.
