Default side effects of Crinone 8%?

So, my doctor wants me to take progesterone (crinone 8%/ two times daily) because my progesterone level was low (the first day I went for bloodwork). I started the crinone today, but as I was reading over the side effects, it listed a few possible birth defects as side effects. I was just curious if anybody has used this medicine before and if you know how high the risks are. I don't think I have too much of a choice, but maybe I should be taking a different brand? Any input??? Thanks Ladies!

Missy--I have no idea, but if you are worried about it I would suggest talking with your doctor about your concerns. Probably the chances of it being helpful far outweigh any slight chance of anything going wrong, but I'm sure your doctor wouldn't mind putting your mind at ease.

I do plan on calling her in the morning, but my guess is she will just say the risks are so small and not taking progesterone will probably lead to miscarriage... I just wasn't sure if somebody had taken this before or had heard of it... good call though

Missy - the crinone is a plant based progesterone supplement, so it is from natural sources rather than being a synthetic progesterone. My guess is, it's better to be safe than sorry. All medications, from natural sources or synthetic, will have a warning on the label about pregnancy. I think it's a pharmaceutical CYA. You might ask Bina about supplements, since she's been on progesterone for quite some time and took it while she was pg with Avery.

Missy-I haven't heard of that type of progesterone, but I was on prometrium. Only the synthetic progesterones cause birth defects (like provera) and are not safe to take when PG. There is no harm in the natural progesterones, it is the same thing that your body and the placenta produces. It can be scary though, I know my medicine bottle has a big "do not take while PG" warning. I am sure your Dr. will be able to reassure you.

Missy- Surely they wouldnt prescribe it if the benefits didn't outweigh the risks. I'm on prometrium and Bina's right- "do not take while PG". kinda scary, but they keep assuring me it's totally safe.

Missy, I think the warning if for people with a normal progesterone level in which case it would cause higher than normal progesterone levels. Since your level is low and the medication will bring it to the normal range I think it will be okay.

All you ladies rock - thanks so much for the reassurance! I figured it was okay, especially if the professionals prescribed it, but it helps to hear your input.. thanks!
