I've known women who could only see a sac, and everything was fine, because they weren't as far along as they had thought. If you don't know exactly when you ovulated, etc. then it could be too soon to see anything. You can't see the heartbeat until at least 6 weeks, so any u/s before that will probably show an empty sac.
As for the cramping, I think if you aren't bleeding then cramping could be considered normal. It could be from the baby implanting, your uterus expanding and everything growing in there. I am so sorry you are going through this, and that your Dr. seems so cold and quick to mention a D & C without explaining things to you. I would find a new Dr. if I were you! Krissy-I can tell you about my experience with this same issue...but it did not turn out well for me. So I caution you about what I'm going to share cause I don't want to worry you even more. But I found out I was pregnant last Oct. and when I went in for my first u/s it showed I was measuring only 5w5d which concerned me cause I thought I was farther along(and there was a sac with a little squiggle in it). But like Bina said if you aren't sure of when you O'd it could throw off your calculations. So at that first u/s my Dr. said more or less what Bina said...maybe I O'd later than I thought so I was off a little. But the following weekend I had just the smallest amount of pink when I wiped so I called the Dr. and she wanted me to come in for another u/s. So my next u/s(which was a week later) still showed the same 5w5d measurement...and there was definitely a sac, but nothing really in it, and she could never find a heartbeat. So...needless to say, she scheduled me for a D&C the next day. I known this is probably not what you want to hear right now, but hopefully it might help prepare you just in case. I hope that your situation is different than mine and everything turns out to be fine! Keep us posted and let me know if you have any questions. ~B

How were your levels? That is what seems really strange. Not only are my HCG levels high, but they are actually higher than they should be. For a few days they were thinking twins (and it sort of looks like two sacs, but it is unclear). If I had a blighted ovam or something, wouldn't my numbers be lower? I am so confused. I go in on Thursday, but I don't know how I am supposed to wait that long. Especially since I have such awful morning sickness. I hate thinking that I am this sick for nothing. Thanks for your comments

Krissy - I have to agree with Bina - it seems awfully early for your doctor to be talking about d&c especially when you're not exactly sure what is going on. Ovulation isn't the only thing that might throw the calculations off.... implantation has a lot to do with it, too. Anything less than 6 weeks is generally too early to see much in there especially a heartbeat. I think that as long as you're not having any spotting/bleeding with the cramping then that's a good thing. If it looked like the possibility of two sacs, then may be you really have two beans in there, which would be the perfect explaination for the hight betas. Do you mind me asking when your last beta was and how high it was??
I know how hard it is not knowing. Hang in there and try to think positive thoughts. Also, for being so early, I don't think a d&c would even be necessary. IF there is nothing when you go back, see what your doctor says about letting things happen naturally. Your body will know what to do. I've heard that the d&c is not pleasant and can keep you from ttc for a few months until the lining builds back up. |

Thank you so much. I do not know what my exact numbers were last Monday, but I know that they told me my numbers should be at 1500 on Wednesday, and instead they were at 5400, which was much higher than expected. Also, my doc made it sound like the reason she was concerned with not seeing anything was because of the high numbers, more than the date. I measured at 5 weeks 5 days, which is pretty much right with my calculations. I took an ovulation predictor, so I actually know within a day when I ovulated, but if you are right, I guess I could have had a later implantation? This just sucks, I hate the waiting. I have been doing a lot of research, and it sounds like if it were a blighted ovum I would not have the high HCG, and if it were a molar pregnancy, we would have been able to see that on the ultrasound. And I am clinging to the fact that I have not had a single spot of blood.
Incidentally, since I posted I believe that I figured out the source of my extreme cramping. I quit taking the prenatal that I am on (and switched to an over the counter, just to see what happened), and the cramping went away. When I called the nurse told me that some people are very sensitive to certain types of iron, and that they would get me a script for a different type. Go figure! I will keep you all posted, and I appreciate all of your comments and prayers. My husband is pretending that none of this is even happening. I am so jealous of his ability to climb into denial. Unfortunately, that is just not an option for me, as I have seriously icky morning sickness and everything stinks, which is a constant reminder. I just want a healthy pregnancy. Thanks again K |

Well, after I started bleeding (and freaking out), I was sure that I was miscarrying before I even went to my appt. No one was more surprised than me when they saw a HEALTHY HEART BEAT!!!! Looks like I actually concieved twins, and one of them did not make it (hence the blood and cramping), but the other one is healthy and looking good! My due date is October 20th! I think I am still in shock---what a scary and stressful week!! I am still bleeding, but it sounds like things are much more optimistic once they have heard a heartbeat?! Thank you so much for all of your support and prayers. I really appreciate it! I wish you all the best

That happened to one of my friends..actually just recently.
She found out she was preggo with her 2nd baby, then she started cramping and bleeding. She went to the doctor to see if they were going to have to do a D&C and low and behold there was a heartbeat. He told her the exact same thing...that she was preggo with twins and miscarried one of them. I think she is like 12 or 13 weeks along now. I wish you lots of wonderful blessings for you and your little one |

bugaboo-that is great about hearing a heartbeat!!! Yes, once there is a heartbeat the chance of m/c goes dowon significantly. Conceiving twins would also explain why your numbers were so high!! I really think that the Dr. scared you unneccesarily.
