Default Any good remedy for heartburn?

Hi all. Hope you all well.

My wife is now into her 9 weeks pregnancy and she has been experiencing heartburn for the past two weeks, throwing up whatever that goes in.
She was hospitalised last week for two days due to dehydration. Doc gave her IV drips. Got out of hospital, and two days later, the vomiting came back. And I am afraid she will be dehydrated again. So sad that she has to go thru all this. Everytime she throws up, I was standing by and supporting her, I was so useless that I can't do anything to help. The doc has prescribed her with an antacid, but i stopped her from taking it after a few dose since it is not helping out, and checking on the net, that medicine has been discontinued in UK.

Anyone has a good remedy? I am trying on Apple Cider Vinegar, and it seems it is not helping. Sucking on raisins juice didn't help.

Is there a better way/method to take in food after vomiting? Any steps? The net is saying to give her water only after 30 mins. and 15 min intervals after that. We tried that and i am afraid she is not getting enuf water on that.

Anything that can help, please drop a line. Really appreciate it.

Have a nice day...

jy - you can try ginger ale to settle her stomach or anything (tea) with ginger in it. Ginger is commonly used to combat nausea and vomiting.

I have tried ginger, but it didn't work.

She threw out again just now. Mostly liquid. She just ate 2 grapes and i made her a glass of apple cider vinegar. But this time, after throwing out, I gave her some dried crackers to eat and she seems to take it down well. Limiting her fluid intake. At least, she has something solid in her stomach. At the moment, she is asleep. But she still complains of some discomfort, though not as bad as before.

I am planning of giving her some crackers to eat early in the morning, hope it will settle her stomach. The previous admission to the hospital has shown ketones in her urine. I guess its due to lack of food intake.

So hard to see her going thru all this.

jy - you sound like a great supportive husband! The doctor can give her medicine if the sickness is very severe. Has she seen her OB yet? Maybe give them a call and see if they can prescribe her something.

jy - what about pedialite pops? they're popcicles for babies. One of the girls here was really sick for a couple days and she was able to keep those down.... it's worth a shot to keep some liquids in there.

She complained of stomach discomfort after a small meal with brown rice (porridge). Is there anyway that can ease the discomfort. If this goes on for another one hour or so, she's going to throw up again.

How much time does it take the stomach to digest? Will taking some hot lemon juice help?

It doesn't sound like your wife has heartburn, it sounds like morning sickness. With morning sickness I think your wife needs to find what foods do sound at least appealing to her and try them.

When I had it weeks 6-13 I tried eating one thing and threw up, then tried pizza and felt so much better. It's bizarre eating right after you throw up but it's how m/s can work sometimes.

Ginger Ale or sprite and crackers helped me. As well as Peanut butter on toast, baked potatos, pizza, fries, anything carbs.

If she has a serve case where she can't keep anything down I would go to the doctor and get morning sickness medicine to help her.

I hope she feels better.

Hey thanks for the reply. Pizza sounds tempting. never think of that.

Half of the supermarket is oredi in my house, and I think she has got sick of the crackers and biscuits.

The doctor has prescribed her with Antacid and Vit B6. She has stopped antacid, cos it's not doing any good after taking it, moreover, I'm afraid it would harm the baby.

As far as heartburn goes- my Dr says that you can take Mylanta. It works really well for me. Although I haven't taken it yet while pg.... But that is one of the meds on the list that you can take while pg. Sorry I am so late on the subject!

Another tough day passed...

Will walking help? The reason I asked is that she has been staying in bed or sitting on bed. Not walking much. Doc has said it's better for her to go out and walk around. Is it true?

I really don't know how long is this going to last... javascript:emoticon('')

jy - Maybe getting some fresh air will help... it's worth a shot - especially if the doctor recommended it.

Yes. I have finally persuaded her to get out of bed. She was craving for a soup, and I brought her out to enjoy. And went for a short walk after that. She didn't vomit. I am so relieved. At least she has something to digest now. Hope she will be better today.

Jy - ketones in the urine can be a sign of a UTI (urinary tract infection) - not that it would explain the vomiting - but UTI's are common in women who are not well hydrated and can be dangerous for a pg (pregnant) woman - so have her keep an eye on that. Cranberry juice and water can help - but do not attempt to treat a pg women naturally who has a UTI - she will likely need an antibiotic if she in fact has an infection.

I had a friend who had severe morning sickness and she was prescribed a suppository by her doc. Maybe you can ask the doc about that? Also, have you tried jello and popsicles? Think of flu food, or food that you have wanted or been able to eat when not well. Keep in mind that the fluid intake is the most important thing - even if she just is able to continue with lots of water. The good thing is (unless she gets seriously malnourished which is unlikely) that the body will rely on it's own reserves when ill or in a situation like your wife is now. The baby will not suffer and is likely getting all s/he needs from those reserves.

Good luck. I would make another trip to the doc or have a chat with a nurse on the phone asking for more options as what they have told you so far has not worked. It will pass, that I am sure of. And I agree with the others - it sounds like morning sickness and not heartburn.

Thanks meagan.

She is feeling a lot better now although she's still experiencing some morning sickness (they should changed the term to "all-day-all-night sickness". She's in her 11th week, hopefully it will pass in the next week or so. We went for a check up a week ago and the doc has seen the heartbeat and comforted my wife that everything is going well, and she shouldn't be worry if she's still having vomiting, it's a good sign.

I am so glad that your wife is feeling better and that the pregnancy is progressing well. Yes, you are right - it should be called all-day, all-night sickness!!! . Hopefully it will subside in the next couple of weeks, if not sooner!
