Study suggests eating lots of ice cream may aid fertility
(National-NBC) March 20, 2007 - Eating ice cream may help a woman get pregnant, and the higher the fat content the better, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health.
A diet rich in ice cream and other high-fat dairy foods may help a woman conceive.
Researchers say women who ate at least one serving of high fat dairy food a day reduced their risk of infertility by more than 25%, if the infertility was due to a lack of ovulation.
The researchers think the reason is a fat soluble substance that improves ovarian function, but they aren't sure.
Registered dietician Linda Antinoro is skeptical of the study.
She says, "Even the researchers were perplexed. They said something associated with the dairy fat, but they couldn't pinpoint what that was."
Researchers got their data from questionnaires of about 19,000 women who are part of the nurses health study.
(National-NBC) March 20, 2007 - Ms. Antinoro says, "That has some questions, too. You're asking people to remember what they ate and report, and so there can be questions of accuracy with that."
And Antinoro says women need to remember that ice cream is also high in calories.
"If somebody didn't take account of those calories and led to gaining weight and obesity, that we know was proven to reduce your chances of fertility and cause infertility."
The study is published in the journal Human Reproduction.
