It was set up because of Dru Sjodin, a college student here in North Dakota that was killed by a registered sex offender. He recently got the death sentence. You should look and see if there are any in your area. There in one in my town...and our population is less than 400 people!

Regina- I know they made a big deal about this one, is it because it is a national site instead of a state site? Are there other national sites out there. Just curious.

Dh and I just checked our area for them, too. There are I think 16, but they don't live that close. Probably because there is an elementary school 1 block away from here. I can hear the kids playing and sometimes the announcements.

Ther are 94 in my town! (population around 39,000) And some live pretty dang close to me! Me and DH live on the "bad" side of town but there are just as many on the otherside. Makes me nervous, plus there is an elementary school just down the street. I think it would be better for me to not look at this site.

Yeah I know that's pretty scary! We are planning on moving to the other side of town within the next few months but it's not any better there are 53 an the "bad side" and 41 on the "good side" ! Not much of a difference!

I didn't even check my whole city - I just did a 5 mile radius of my house. Most of the offenders seemed to be conglomerated into one or two areas (where there are lots of apartments) and I can't remember for sure, but I think they were more than a mile away. I guess that doesn't really make much of a difference, though, since most people have cars and what's to stop them from driving into my neighborhood.

How do you check so many miles from your house? All I can find is how to check by zip codes.

In 2005 my city had a population of 80,000, so I'm sure it's more now. I just checked the sex offenders and there's 17. That's still too many for me

Hmm...I don't remember. I think I probably checked by zip code and since I live in such a big city they narrowed it down to a 5 mile radius. I'm not 100% sure, though. It's been over a month since I checked. The only reason I remember it at all is that Dh and his friend from work were here and it was their idea to check the Megan's Law website. They wanted to see what a sex offender looked like/what they did, and they of course had a blast laughing at and making fun of them. Well, they were funny at the time, but it doesn't sound so funny looking back.

Thanks, I think I can only search my city by zipcode, but on the Oklahoma one there are 53 in my zipcode, Hmmmm wonder if I should tell DH, maybe it will persuade him to find us a place to move faster Probably not cause the other side of town is not any better.

I haven't checked this one out yet, but I did one about 2 years ago. And I'm close to Disney - and there were a ton in the area.
