Katrina's Effect on Pregnancy Studied

New Orleans (AP) - Hurricane Katrina's continuing impact is most frequently discussed in terms of dollars, trailers and voters, but a medical study is using a different means of measurement. The Woman's Hospital research institute in Baton Rouge and Tulane university health science center in New Orleans have begun a study of women who became pregnant before the devastating hurricane came ashore.

Specifically, those 18 and older whose due date is on or before June five are eligible to take part in the study. It will examine how the storm and its aftermath affected pregnancy outcomes. The national institute of child health and development is funding the study, titled "born after the storm." Tulane's Lakeside Hospital is recruiting 200 women who were in the New Orleans area when the storm hit and have returned to deliver their babies.

Woman's Hospital is recruiting 100 New Orleans-area evacuees who are having their babies in Baton Rouge, as well as 200 who were not heavily affected by the storm to serve as the control group.
