Default Baby in Dumpster in FL

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Police are calling her, "Baby Jane Doe." A newborn baby, found in a Southside dumpster.

Witnesses say a woman taking out her trash at the Beachwood Apartments heard crying from inside a dumpster. She rushed to her neighbors for help.

They looked in the dumpster and spotted a pink pillowcase. When it moved, they quickly reached in and pulled the case out, laying it on the ground.

Inside they found the baby wrapped in a blanket. The baby still had its umbilical cord attached.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the baby was rushed in critical condition to Baptist Medical Center where she was cleaned up and hydrated.

The newborn is breathing on its own and is expected to be fine.

The question now is, who is the child's mother?

JSO went door-to-door through the apartment complex for answers, but no one knew of anyone who had been pregnant.

Residents told First Coast News people from nearby neighborhoods routinely dump their trash in the dumpster at the apartment complex.

By Florida law, any mother who, for any reason, feels they cannot keep a child, can drop the child off at any fire station or emergency room with no questions asked.

This really upset me too. We have that law here in California that a baby can be dropped off at any firestation or emergency room within 72 hours after being born. No questions asked. Why do people put the baby in a dumpster when it can be taken care of. Not only that, there's a good chance they will find the mother and she will go to jail. Hopefully!

That is just horrible. I don't understand either why the mother couldn'thave dropped the baby off at the hospital or firestation. There are so many wonderful couples who want to adopt and would be wonderful parents.

We have the same law in SC except it includes hospitals, fire stations and churches.

OMG you would have to have NO heart to do this. A life that lived within you for 9 months, and then just left as trash?! I don't get it. I saw an Oprah show about this, I think it is called the "Safe Haven Law" for infant abandonment where you can leave it at the mentioned places no questions asked. I think people are just unaware of this maybe? IDK.

Ditto on what you girls said!! And what about the mother, does she think she does not need any medical attention? Most of us here got epidurals, lost of people tare...I mean did it just fall out and she cut the cord and go about her business? Ridiculous!!!!

This infuriates me There are soooo many people out there that would love more than anything to have a precious bundle of joy and can't for one reason or another Then there are people like this woman that has a little angel and does this. What's the world coming to?
