I guess it's just another case of the "where I'm from" thing. Here, the main difference between the "rich" and "poor" was that the "poor" girls didn't have abortions (or use birth control) because they were catholic......so it was more likely that ppl knew about their PG's.

I don't know if its so much that educated/rich kids are less likely to engage in sex as teenagers so much as they're more likely to use protection. Either way its scary that these kids think getting pregnant is a lark... I'm sure they'll learn the hard way that its not and the ones who will really suffer are the poor babies.

Irene, all the statistics I've read do show that educated kids are less likely to engage in sexual activity as a teenager. Not sure how accurate it is, if you google teenage pregnancy and income or education, you'll probably wind up on some of the pages I was on.
Either way, my point was that being educated, and having educated parents, USUALLY gives kids an advantage, and helps children understand the importance of finishing school, and not having babies as a 15 year-old. USUALLY. Obviously not always.

Em - I obviously haven't googled the statistics. I guess I'm basing it on what I see on Law & Order and my own experiences which is probably less than accurate

I lived in the poor areas and went to school there too but I partied with the rich southern baptist kids and they were hella worse than we were. Secretly I just think there was a good combo of preparation and secret abortions on the richer end. In fact I KNOW 2 whose parents made them get abortions so it didn't get out.

I'm with Amber on this one. I knew a few rich kids that got knocked up and had "hush hush abortions".
It's sad but true. I was brought up in a middle class, semi religious environment. I was a virgin until I was 17 (that's when I met my Dh) I was afraid that the first time I had sex, that I would get pregnant. I think that's what kept me a virgin for so long. My Mama had me when she was 16. She missed out on a lot of stuff, including her education. I always got good grades. I never even had a C until I was in 11th grade and it was a high C. I never got another one either. I was afraid I was going to end up just like her and I had higher hopes for myself. Don't get me wrong, I love my Mama, but I didn't want to miss out on all the stuff that she did. Sorry I'm rambling.....I understand from all points of view though. |
