Lisa when I had my daughter I had no drugs and I was in labor for 20 hours and 3 hours of pushing. The baby's shoulder got stuck and she was not breathing when she was born thank god she was fine and she healthy and beautiful. When I get pregnant again my doctor said they in induce early so I can have a baby no bigger than 7 pounds because my pelvis is small and my next delivery (hopefully soon lol) we also be drug free. No one is sticking a needle in my back. If you have the tolerance to do it I say go for it. I also have a very high tolerance for pain. Good Luck and baby dust to you.

my doctor told me i have lose like 60 pounds. i was like what?! that means i would have to be very skinny. i dont want to be that skinny. but she said that because of my weight right now, it would bring a lot of complications like pre-eclampsia, or whatever you call it, and this other complication i cant remember the name of. i come from a family that has high blood pressure, so they want me to be at a healthy weight to prevent me from having high blood pressure. im already eating healthy and exercising and if it (conceiving) happens now, im going to go for it. my mom was telling me that she was at a healthy weight when she got pregnant and she still had high blood pressure...so i dont know. i still want it all natural

My first was a 24 hour labor that included pitosin, morphine (eew, made me puke) and two epidurals. Let me tell you ladies, I think I would have died without it. Three hours of pushing and a nice tear to go with it. Not only could I not stand up to hold my baby, I couldn't feel anything below the breasts, like when to pee, etc. But, it was my journey. I had planned ALL natural.
My second, I almost gave birth in the passenger side of the car while my DH sped down the freeway with sheer panic on his face and one hand on my belly. This child slid out of my body, with nurses telling me "stop, no, don't push, you're not ready, you're not dilated" (and I was dialted darn it) within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital. I delivered with zero meds, no doctor, and barely a nurse to catch my slippery bean girl. It was GREAT, AMAZING to feel my child slither out of my body. The pain was not to be described by words, but overtook my body and mind. I had planned ALL meds all the way, and was demandning the IV for my epidural before I had even stripped down and climbed on the bed. Funny how labors never turn out how you expect. However, despite them being different than I expected, I would do them both again just the same. This time, I plan on taking it natural as long as my body will tolerate it. Should my plan change or fall apart, I will go with the flow, and know I am in charge of what happens and am in charge of my body, even if I am not in charge of my pain. Water sounds good, walking sounds good (no lying down the whole time, yuck). Midwife sounds good. Blessings to your bellies! |

Phillychica, I am so with you. I had both of my babies with epidurals (I was scared about the needle in back at first but was in so much pain if they had to put the needle in my eye to make that pain go away I would have agreed) I really wanted all natural at first but this worked great for me because i was so calm after I was able to spend time with my family and friends and really enjoy my day.

I thought that I wanted nothing for pain until it took me 5 hours to get to 4cm. Then I had to have something or I was not going to make it because it ended up being 18 hour labor. Each case is different. There has been many women before us that has done it without the luxary of pain meds and a clean hospital setting. I know I will take the drugs with this pregnancy because labor wears you out enough. The pain just makes it that much more exhausting. However, if you can do it, go for it. Molly |

I definitely want the epidural. They asked me at my first prenatal visit if I wanted natural childbirth or anesthesia. I told them definitely drugs!!!! I even asked could I have it then so I could avoid the pain, LOL! The closer it gets, the more nervous I'm getting. I'm worried about whether or not I can handle the pain up to the point where I can have an epidural. In my childbirth class Thursday night, the nurse said they now would give you the epidural around 4 or 5cm if you wanted it. I'm just wondering how bad the pain will be before I get to that point.

Kelli, with my girls I was almost that far by the time I got to the hospital. The pain was bad, but not anything really awful. I could still talk through it. I wasnt going to get the epidural with my first and waited until I was at a 7 and by then it had been 26 hrs, I am so glad I got it because I was able to take a short nap before pushing and I really needed the strength. I think you will be just fine and when you get your epidural you will really enjoy the day.

sorry Kristy I didnt see this question until today. It really depends on how fast you are dialating the general rule is 8cm but if you are going really slow they will let you do it later and if you are going really fast (generally by this stage of labor which is called transition you are going really fast) they may not have time to get one in before its time to start pushing.
