Rebecca, I think it's for treatment of gene mutations? Not exactly sure. I found this on the web:

"What you may not know is that folic acid can also play a role in preventing miscarriage. A study last year found that inadequate levels are positively linked to an increased risk of early miscarriage -- by as much as 50% in groups with low levels of folic acid. In addition, the same study found no link between high folic acid levels and increased risk of miscarriage. In addition, if you have tested positive for a gene mutation called MTHFR, there's some evidence that high doses of folic acid can reduce the risk of miscarriage."

Low Folic Acid Linked to Miscarriage

Lauren, the doc said it will only take about 10-15 minutes and that I just need to take ibuprofen beforehand. He said it's not particularly painful, but that I might have cramping. I also can't have sex for a week afterwards to reduce risk of infection, so I better jump on DH tonight
